Localisation

We are convinced that in order for the development initiatives to have real and meaningful impact, they must be designed, implemented and led by the communities in which they are delivered. For the last 4 years we have worked hard to make this a reality within our organisation, implementing numerous strategies to build the capacity of our team in Rwanda, create local representation boards and build in-country systems of accountability. The end result is a fully trained and capable team in Rwanda, able to design, implement and evaluate context-specific projects that are overseen by a local board who are elected by our beneficiary community. We have seen amazing results as this approach means our projects are better tailored to their unique context which ultimately makes them more impactful and cost-effective.
One example of local ownership we are particularly proud of, was when Josiane was elected to the board of trustees in Rwanda. This was a huge moment for us as Josiane was one of our first ever beneficiaries, and now she sits on the governing body of the organisation.

Ensuring members of the local community like Josiane have the loudest voice within the organisation keeps our work grounded in the needs of our beneficiaries and makes our projects more impactful.
